Global Warming and Polar Bears

Friday, January 08, 2010

As you already may know, Global Warming has taken the lives of thousands of Polar Bears in the wild. As temperatures have increased sharply in recent decades, Arctic Ice (which is their habitat) has been melting away in the process. With less land to live on, these Polar Bears are now all competing for the same food. With each passing year, these Polar Bears alive in the wild are living on less and less land, but competing for the same food. Eventually many Polar Bears die off since there isn't enough food for all of them in the wild. Within the past 30 years, approximately 20% of their habitat has melted away. As available sea ice decreases, polar bears have to swim farther to find suitable habitat and it takes much longer to find a meal. Compounding the problem, sea ice loss also impacts polar bears main food source--seals.

The effects of Global Warming are just too overwhelming, but we can step in and slow down the rate of it occurring. Polar bears need our help and protection to ensure a long, healthy future for the species. The best way you can help polar bears is by reducing your carbon emissions, which will also help reduce the several other effects (LINK) of Global Warming.

Scientists are predicting that by 2060 approximately two-thirds of the world's Polar Bears will disappear as the ice continues to melt.
